Simon, Simon, where art thou Simon?

I’ve spent 3 of the last 4 weeks in Tanzania, performing a mixture of charity and leisure activities (http://rmfuturebuilding.blogspot.com/) so I had to take a month gap from doing any coaching. However, my time away provided me with ample opportunity to reflect on my progression as a coach over the last 3 months and to read the excellent book, ‘Inverting the Football Pyramid, by Jonathan Wilson.

If you haven’t read it, and you’re a bit of a football geek (especially when it comes to tactics) I’d highly recommend it. The book starts in the 19th century, detailing the beginnings of the game we love and then takes you on a journey from 2-3-5, to W-M, to M-M, to 4-2-4, 4-3-3 and on to the modern day. It gives a great insight in to the thinking of a collection of the most innovate men in football across the past 100 years and also opens your eyes to some of the great sides of the same period.

So, 4 week break complete and next week I’ll be back on the pitch with the U7s and continuing my objectives of learning about coaching, embedding the knowledge picked up on the FA Level 1 course and most importantly¬†– helping young players improve whilst enjoying their football.
